1972 Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry… Don McClain’s “American Pie” is the top album on the Billboard 200.

1972 David Bowie tells Melody Maker that he’s bisexual. Bowie also predicts he’ll be huge.

1988 Nirvana recorded a 10-song demo with Seattle producer Jack Endino. Sub Pop records boss Jonathan Poneman hears the tape and offers to put out a Nirvana single.

1990 Allen Collins guitarist from Lynyrd Skynyrd died of pneumonia after being ill for several months. Collins who was one of the founding members also co-wrote most of the band’s songs (including Free Bird), with late front man Ronnie Van Zant. He survived a plane crash in 1977 that killed two other band members. Collins was behind the wheel in a car accident in 1986 that killed his girlfriend and left him paralyzed from the waist down. He later pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

1990 David Bowie announced his forthcoming Sound And Vision world tour, during which he would invite each local audience to decide on a ‘greatest hits’ running order, organized through local radio stations. The concert tour surpassed Bowie’s previous Serious Moonlight (1983) and Glass Spider (1987) tours’ statistics by visiting 27 countries with 108 performances.

1991 John Sebastian, owner and general manager of KLSK FM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, played Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ for twenty-four solid hours to inaugurate a format change to Classic Rock. Police showed up with guns drawn: once after a listener reported that the DJ had apparently suffered a heart attack, and later because of suspicion that, this being eight days into the Gulf War, the radio station had been taken hostage by terrorists dispatched by Zeppelin freak Saddam Hussein.

1994 Rod Stewart, Sting, and Bryan Adams take “All For Love” to #1 in the U.S. The ballad is on “The Three Musketeers” soundtrack. The song was co-written by Adams for the movie’s end credits.

2012 A Volkswagen Jetta commercial uses Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.” The ad shows a young man’s vehicle purchases before becoming a mature father buying a Volkswagen.

2013 Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page appears in a spread for menswear designer John Varvatos. The photos were shot at London’s Rivoli Ballroom.

2015 A ‘65 Mosrite Ventures V1 guitar once owned by the late Johnny Ramone (The Ramones) is auctioned for $71,000 by Boston-based RR Auction.

2016 Pearl Jam launch an effort that raises $300,000 for the victims of the Flint, MI water crisis where for two years dangerous amounts of lead-contaminated the drinking water. The group also start a crowdfunding campaign to help Flint residents purchase water filters, bottled water, emergency support services, and prevention efforts.

2016 Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss co-hosts the Women’s International Music Network’s (WiMN) She Rocks Awards in Anaheim, CA. The event honors women who stand out as role models in the music industry.

2016 Ex-Pantera singer Philip Anselmo’s “white power” salute, while performing Pantera’s “Walk” during a benefit in Hollywood honoring late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott has some calling Anselmo a racist. Anselmo later states that he “deserves completely” the “heat” that he has taken and apologizes for his actions.

2018 Kid Rock says he is donating more than $100,000 from sales of merchandise during his “joke” Senate campaign to CRNC Action, a GOP voter registration effort.

2019 Vixen announce they have recruited Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale) as their lead singer following the departure of Janet Gardner. Lewis had a stint with Vixen in ‘18 while Gardner recovered from surgery.

2023 Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose sings “November Rain” during the public memorial service at Graceland for Lisa Marie Presley. Elvis Presley’s only child died on 1/12 at the age of 54.
